How Not To Sort By Average Rating

http://evanmiller.org/how-not-to-sort-by-average-rating.html

A formula for better weighting of products where the reviews are binary ("good" or "bad"). Great HN post: discusses a real problem, provides real examples, explains why they are wrong, and justifies the correct solution (a bit).

When will computer hardware match the human brain? by Hans Moravec

http://www.transhumanist.com/volume1/moravec.htm

Actually answers the related question, "When will the raw processing capability of computer hardware match the raw processing capability of the human brain?" and comes up with "Between 2020 and 2030." The analysis for this is strong, the arguments relating power-of-computer-hardware to ability-to-display-humanlike-intelligence relatively unconvincing (perhaps because this isn't the point of the paper, but the connection is certainly implied).

Meat eaters downplay animal minds | Psychology Today

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/ulterior-motives/201202/meat-eaters-downplay-animal-minds

"There was a systematic relationship between the animals people choose to eat and their beliefs about the minds of the animals.  People were much less willing to eat animals that they believe have complex mental abilities than to eat animals that do not have complex minds." This is pretty much Hofstadter's argument, and to me it is appealingly simple, though muddy if investigated too closely.

There may be no universal facial expressions

http://mindhacks.com/2012/02/12/a-culture-shock-for-universal-emotion/

This makes sense to me as I have an unusual amount of difficulty with the "what expression does this face have" type personality tests (but I'm fairly sure I don't have an autism-spectrum disorder). Given this finding, it seems likely that such tests are in fact complete bullshit.
