Things could be good | Dazed

https://www.dazeddigital.com/politics/article/55532/1/uk-britain-cynicism-nihilism-could-actually-be-good-adam-curtis

> There is something haunting and desperate about the chokehold that white, sallow humans from southern England have over the identity of the UK. [Adam Curtis] suggests many white people entered a state of prolonged philosophical mourning over the loss of the empire; sleepwalking through a kind of ambient identity crisis, confused as to what their "story" now was.

This article reflects some of my views of the UK, but offers little in the way of explanation beyond the above. It seems plausible (it occurred to me as well), but it's been a long time since Empire -- societies can change much faster than this, why hasn't the UK?

One of the activists mentioned in the article shows up in the thread.

"I was one of the activists who had their computers seized. I told the police to kiss my ass and they gave up trying to get my password. Though I guess a 6 month concurrent sentence when you’ve already got 4 years isn’t worth the paperwork. Prison was butlins btw. I highly recommend it. Plenty of time to read books"

Stakhanovite movement - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stakhanovite_movement

The term Stakhanovite (стахановец) originated in the Soviet Union and referred to workers who modeled themselves after Alexey Stakhanov. These workers took pride in their ability to produce more than was required, by working harder and more efficiently, thus strengthening the socialist state.

Reverse engineering Naughty Dog's proprietary Lisp, with the goal of decompiling all the GOAL code in Jack and Daxter in order to provide a reimplementation.

The generated assembly for their factorial function is very nice, in that it looks like the output of an unoptimised C compiler rather than a Lisp compiler.

Why are there 3 Minor Scales? | School of Composition

https://www.schoolofcomposition.com/why-are-there-3-minor-scales/

Because we started with one which is just the aolian mode (natural minor), then sharpened the 7th to get more satisfying harmonic progressions, particularly when leading from chords involving the 7th to the tonic (harmonic minor), then sharpened the 6th as well on the way up to make it sound less weird when singing, but reverted to aolian when desending (melodic minor).

Basically, because they sound good in different contexts.

Wish I'd learnt more music theory.

Canon Cat - YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jErqdRE5zpQ

The Canon Cat, designed by Jef Raskin and released in 1987, stores what it was displaying when you switch it off, so what when you switch it on again it can show you that screen quickly while it boots in the background. Very funny that Apple ripped *this* feature off, too, when designing how iPhone apps would work in the face of app suspend (send to background) and resume.

Project Zero: A deep dive into an NSO zero-click iMessage exploit: Remote Code Execution

https://googleprojectzero.blogspot.com/2021/12/a-deep-dive-into-nso-zero-click.html

This is so cool. The exploited code is in the JBIG2 image compression algorithm, which lets you apply arbitrary logical operators to arbitrary portions of the image. So the exploit builds a small computer out of logic gates which it can then "run" by applying logical functions to various parts of the image at decompression time.

A Day in Autumn, by R. S. Thomas

https://www.poeticous.com/r-s-thomas/a-day-in-autumn

It will not always be like this,
The air windless, a few last
Leaves adding their decoration
To the trees’ shoulders, braiding the cuffs
Of the boughs with gold; a bird preening

In the lawn’s mirror. Having looked up
From the day’s chores, pause a minute,
Let the mind take its photograph
Of the bright scene, something to wear
Against the heart in the long cold.

Implicature - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Implicature#Conversational_implicature

"""
Take for example the following exchange:

A (to passer by): I am out of gas.
B: There is a gas station 'round the corner.

Here, B does not say, but conversationally implicates, that the gas station is open, because otherwise his utterance would not be relevant in the context. Conversational implicatures are classically seen as contrasting with entailments: They are not necessary or logical consequences of what is said, but are defeasible (cancellable). So, B could continue without contradiction:

B: But unfortunately it's closed today.
"""

This is not the first time that B has acted like a jerk on Wikipedia. I think they should start consulting someone else for their examples.
