Creepiest part AFAICT is that if you use their mobile app they may ask for a photo which they may then show to effectively anybody but specifically to local users so that they know you are "within local reach as a customer". I hope this creepiness stays with their mobile app.

Pastes Formed With Gum - Pate De Guimauve - Marsh-Mallow Paste

http://chestofbooks.com/food/recipes/Complete-Cook/Pastes-Formed-With-Gum-Pate-De-Guimauve-Marsh-Mallow-Pas.html

Old recipe for marshmallows made with real marshmallow root. My favourite parts are the way two persons are required for a small portion in the middle, and the way 18 egg whites suddenly appear near the end of the recipe.

Even with 2FA, Google accounts can be hacked with just a phone number | Hacker News

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8541313

I dislike 2fa, so this just reinforces my bias, but it's interesting because enabling 2fa and thus adding his phone number as a recovery option made him more vulnerable to attack, not less.

Fascinating: trading rights for Danish sugar beet production in a double auction, using encrypted bids which are never decrypted. The computation for the trading price is performed directly on the encrypted data using "secure multiparty computation", which sounds similar to, but isn't, homomorphic encryption.

Wireless Power Charger!

http://www.instructables.com/id/Wireless-Ipod-Charger/?ALLSTEPS

wireless charging is pretty simple: basically a long-distance transformer. On the receiving end you need a rectifier (ac->dc), regulator (->5v), and a capacitor to even out the charge. That's basically it.
